The Cyrists are swiftly moving into position to begin the Culling, and Kate’s options are dwindling. With each jump to the past or the future, Kate may trigger a new timeline shift. Worse, the loyalties of those around her—including the allegiances of Kiernan and the Fifth Column, the shadowy group working with Kate—are increasingly unclear.

Kate will risk everything, including her life, to prevent the future her grandfather and the Cyrists have planned. But, when time runs out, it may take an even bigger sacrifice to protect the people she loves.

room dressed in my new custom toga. Thor most definitely lost his cool when he realized he’d been tricked, and much like his colleague the Hulk, you wouldn’t like him when he’s angry. On the other hand, I could get used to “clothes shopping” in the twenty-fourth century. Campbell’s closet is almost entirely bare, but as soon as I stepped in, the closet lights surged a few times and I heard a brief humming noise, like I was being scanned. Then a voice—thankfully not the Alisa voice, but a male

spare, so why wouldn’t at least some of the Cyrists have a spare? Edna lets out a staccato scream. A fine mist of blood sprays from her head, and the tray falls from her hand as she slumps to the floor. I catch the tray one-handed and, unfortunately, at an angle. Two of the vials tumble out and roll away, one toward the Templars in the audience and the other toward June. She drops the rifle from her shoulder as she stares at Edna. Her face is ashen. I can’t imagine any scenario where her being in this room improves the situation. She’s not even armed. Connor’s expression tells me he’s thinking the exact same thing. Prudence glances from Connor to Simon, then over to where I’m wedged up against Conwell, then back across the room. And then she bursts out

the shoulders of a young man looking outside. Several cots are on the floor, along with a bed and two chairs. Stacks of papers are everywhere, scattered among the books and office equipment. Zulu comes running over and hugs her aunt. The green hat is still hanging on her back. The young man follows her, making strange noises. This must be Byron, Victoria’s older child who was born with brain damage. Tennie pulls him into the hug, too. “It’s all right, Byron,” she says, rubbing his back. “But we

this jump strengthens. Kiernan is currently combing through the Future-Wiki that the Fifth Column put together. Every few minutes he gives a huff and jots something in his notebook. He’s sitting in the same spot where I saw him with Prudence. It’s not the first time that memory has sneaked into my brain in the past hour. And each time I think about Pru on his lap, my resolve to include Kiernan on this jump weakens. That’s probably not fair—to either Max or Kiernan—but I have little reason to
