Because the lower land to the east was frequently swampy, many of the first houses in Rogers Park were built on this street. A few cottages, some from the 1870s, remain. In 1973, as Frank Lloyd Wright’s Francisco Terrace apartments in Chicago were about to be demolished, quick action on the part of real estate agent John Baird, attorney and historian Devereux Bowly, and architect Ben Weese salvaged the terra-cotta arch, cornice, decorative panels, and other ornamentation. Adapting Wright’s plan, Weese created a courtyard complex of seventeen town houses, replicating the original massing and details. The entry arch forms a beautiful terminus to Linden Ave.
